5/30/2023 0 Comments Ensnared jody hedlundJotunn, a creepy forest, forbidden swoony romance, an evil brother, and a quest for the Holy Grail make Jody Hedlund’s Ensnared a thrilling latest installment in the Knights of Brethren series! I love this series and find with each book, I love it even more. “One act of courage has the power to clear the path for more.” I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own. I cannot wait for more books in this series and to get to the bottom of what this bleeding curse is about. Both the characters were amazing, naturally Gunnar/Gawain was my favorite but that's a given. The plot was really great, kept me guessing and I'll never grow tired of just how Norse inspired this story world is (we've got some jottun in this one). Okay Imma stop talking now before I convince myself to start writing a book exclusively about Gawain □ (one of these days though.). He's the hero we both need and deserve □ Actually, every Arthurian story should star Gawain. Every retelling of King Arthur should have a Gawain. He's my favorite figure from Arthurian stories period. I don't know how many of you know this, but Gawain is my absolute favorite Knight of the Round Table. I read it in just two days (and if you guys are familiar with my reading speed you know that's a feat □). This one was the best yet! But then I didn't expect otherwise from Gawain's *cough* I mean Gunnar's story.

5/30/2023 0 Comments Saving Grace by Julie GarwoodStill, Johanna survives-he's not only handsome but great in bed. It's cold, dank, and uncomfortable up there among the crags, and at first MacBain seems an uncouth bear of a man. So Johanna's brother takes her off to the Scottish Highlands for safekeeping-and effectively gives her to Gabriel MacBain, the laird to two squalling clans, the MacBain and the Maclaurin. But her troubles haven't ended, since the king suspects she knows he murdered his nephew in order to consolidate his place on the throne. Heroine Lady Johanna-an abused and battered wife, wed to Baron Raulf, a vassal of King John of England-is pleased when the news comes that her husband's dead. A hardcover debut by a writer well known in paperback romance klatches confronts the question of the place of women in 13th- century England and Scotland-i.e., where they stand in God's love, and whether their husbands should beat them. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Kill River by Cameron RoubiqueStacy shepherds Cyndi out of her shell and into their too-cool-for-summer-camp hijinks, and that’s where the trouble starts. But, Stacy seems to get Cyndi-she sticks up for her when fellow peak-80’s-named cohorts Brad and Zack give Cyndi crap for being so quiet and just listening to music all of the time. She meets Stacy-a girl who on the outside seems like a clone of all the girls who have rejected Cyndi before and someone who would never waste her time on Cyndi except to maybe terrorize her. What she thinks will be an absolute summer nightmare starts out being better than she expected. So, when pleas for a little less Sony and a little more socialization fall unheard on Cyndi’s headphone-covered ears, they decide to send her to summer camp. Cyndi sometimes wishes she could find friends that shared her interests or at least didn’t crap all over hers, and that way, maybe then she wouldn’t be the cafeteria outcast just hanging with her Walkman.Ĭyndi’s introverted ways have of course started to worry her parents. She’s perfectly content to stay at home on the weekends making mix-tapes…well, almost. Kill River by Cameron Roubique introduces us to Cyndi-a girl way more interested in the best songs on the radio and the newest videos in heavy MTV-rotation than trying to figure out her place in the high-school hierarchy. 5/30/2023 0 Comments The poet michael connelly reviewThere’s little need to recount the broad plot. It would be something, to know their nature. “We hear of men like Shalmanezer or Sargon, who won great battles,” David concedes, before naming a list of other leading lights. The book is narrated by Natan, the prophet through whom God speaks to David, who convinces the king - at what today we might call a midcareer point - of the wisdom of chronicling his already legendary life. The feelings it’s likely to inspire in readers aren’t new to human civilization, but they may be new to you. It isn’t for me to argue with Scripture, but I will say that Geraldine Brooks’s latest novel, “The Secret Chord” - a thundering, gritty, emotionally devastating reconsideration of the story of King David - makes a masterly case for the generative power of retelling. There is nothing new under the sun, the author of Ecclesiastes emphatically noted: All inventions are reinventions, all new stories merely fresh costuming for age-old tales. Her publishing career began with two novellas, and she currently has multiple projects under way whilst Honour, a compilation of her own military based shorts, was released in November 2013 and her short novel, The One That Got Away was released February 2015. Writing has been her one true love ever since she could spell, and publishing is the final culmination of her hard work and ambition. She is also a serious doodler and chocoholic. Currently at university studying for her BA (Hons) in primary teaching, she procrastinates on her assignments by listening to music of all genres and trying to get ‘just one more paragraph’ written on whichever WIP is open. Feeney is an army brat who finally settled down in Birmingham, UK with her other half, two kids and a dog. 5/30/2023 0 Comments The hyperion omnibusSome readers may know that I've written four novels set in the "Hyperion Universe"- Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, and The Rise of Endymion. In his introduction to "Orphans of the Helix", Simmons elaborates: The original Hyperion Cantos has been described as a novel published in two volumes, published separately at first for reasons of length. "Orphans" is currently the final work in the Cantos, both chronologically and internally. After the quartet was published came the short story " Orphans of the Helix". It then inspired his short story "Remembering Siri", which eventually became the nucleus around which Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion formed. The Hyperion universe originated when Simmons was an elementary school teacher, as an extended tale he told at intervals to his young students this is recorded in " The Death of the Centaur", and its introduction. " Remembering Siri" (1983, included almost verbatim in Hyperion). The series also includes three short stories: This final novel in the series finishes the story begun in Endymion, expanding on the themes in Endymion, as Raul and Aenea battle the Church and meet their respective destinies. Read about his life in this optimistic and fascinating roadbook adventure. A peek into what really goes on behind the glassy-eyed smile of a male street worker. It may not have been pretty, and there was risk and danger as well as fun and thrills, but Paul had the audacity to succeed in his quest to obtain happiness, security and wealth. Without added glamour or grit, Paul shares the raw accounts of his life as a rent-boy in the 90s, from London to Los Angeles. The character development is so well done and they just grow through each book. I love these characters and their unique personalities. I will just always feel there is a better way to be expressive than foul language. The foul language can be a bit much sometimes, but the story as a whole is well done. This is the third book in this series and I am really enjoying the series. I like pretty much everything I've read by Hayes. This (I thought) at times threatened to get a little wordy on giving our protagonists inner thoughts and their angst filled lives but in the end it/he did a good job of bringing it all together. Yes huge decisions and momentous events await! I mean will the world survive all this? Will the good guys be revealed? Will our collage age heroes be able to stay in school.while picking the correct major? We lost one of our protagonists (or did we?) and now the world is so mysteriously turning on it's head. So we are now up to book 3 and things are getting stickier, more dangerous and possibly more convoluted. I need to get a new key board, the letters are worn off the keys on this one and I'm a self taught typist so you know.) Thus my poor completed books just set there, pining for a review.Īny way (anyway?) this/these books are surprisingly good. I finished this some time ago I haven't felt like reviewing for some time. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Book 2 hunger gamesI would recommend this entire series to anyone and would give this book a 10/10. The second book in Suzanne Collinss phenomenal and worldwide bestselling Hunger Games trilogy is now available in trade paperback. There is definitely more of a sense of unity among the victors of all people, and the feel of a pre-war spark and the sense of hope that follows these uprisings. We learn more about the other districts and previous victors in this book along with the hints of uprisings in these districts, the injustices of the Capitol and people's eagerness to fight back despite the fear. This is where Katniss and Peeta really become a major part of each other's lives with a mutual understanding of most things, and when Peeta becomes more and more important to Katniss. Throughout this book we see Katniss begin to appreciate Peeta as a person and more, rather than her supposed star-crossed lover. However, with a disastrous plot twist and the horrors of the games still looming over her life, Katniss finds comfort in the only other person she knows understands her situation: Peeta. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Skateboard party by karen englishThe warm details of Richard’s African-American family are tempered by the realism of life with a bunch of boisterous boys (as when Richard dribbles soda on his sleeping brother’s face). His delaying of passing on that important message only gets him into further trouble, so has he blown his chances at the skateboard party for good? As with her Nikki and Deja books ( Nikki and Deja, BCCB 2/08, etc.), English gets to the heart of kid logic and reality here Richard isn’t a problem child, just a nice guy who loves to please his teacher, dislikes confrontation, and hasn’t quite matured enough to grasp the consequences of procrastination (“Why hadn’t he just done his report in the first place?” Richard wonders. However, he’s had some focus problems on his schoolwork-he slacked on his part of a group report and missed school the day it was presented, and his scores on spelling and math tests have been poor-and now his teacher wants to talk to his parents. In this new outing about the kids at Carver School, Richard can’t wait to go to the bigger kids’ skateboard party and show off the smooth moves he hopes to develop by then. |
