It would be something, to know their nature. “We hear of men like Shalmanezer or Sargon, who won great battles,” David concedes, before naming a list of other leading lights. The book is narrated by Natan, the prophet through whom God speaks to David, who convinces the king - at what today we might call a midcareer point - of the wisdom of chronicling his already legendary life. The feelings it’s likely to inspire in readers aren’t new to human civilization, but they may be new to you. It isn’t for me to argue with Scripture, but I will say that Geraldine Brooks’s latest novel, “The Secret Chord” - a thundering, gritty, emotionally devastating reconsideration of the story of King David - makes a masterly case for the generative power of retelling. There is nothing new under the sun, the author of Ecclesiastes emphatically noted: All inventions are reinventions, all new stories merely fresh costuming for age-old tales.
