His late-'70s blockbuster "Coma" became a film, as did the late-'80s "Sphinx"-another flick Cook didn't care for. Since his books have always been both best-sellers and recognized as scientifically accurate, Cook has trouble understanding why more haven't become films in a Hollywood starved for original plots. I really wanted to make the real `Outbreak' into a movie to show you can be correct and still suspenseful and exciting." "Virus," on the other hand, is "truthful with the scientific information and still entertaining," Cook insists. That's more like a cartoon than reality." "It suggests you can be dead in a few minutes with a virus and that a vaccine can be developed in a couple of hours. "That was more of an excuse to make some sort of an action movie than an effort to reveal anything truthful," he says.
